The short stormtrooper Finn lets some villagers go out of compassion. They are ordered to round up the remaining villagers and massacre them. The stormtroopers proceed to burn the village to the ground. They land, the hatch opens, and they immediately start taking fire from the villagers. This stormtrooper is Finn, played by John Boyega. The perspective now shifts to a stormtrooper on a transport ship, headed for the planet Jakku at night. The First Order (the bad guys) are onto them! Poe Dameron places the lightsaber inside BB-8 and orders him to flee. Suddenly, the sound of ships are heard in the night. An X-wing pilot, Poe Dameron–played by Oscar Isaac–arrives with his droid, BB-8, to collect the lightsaber from the Vicar. The Vicar contacts the Resistance (the good guys). It finds its way to a village elder, codenamed the Vicar, played by Max Von Sydow. The lightsaber is retrieved by a mysterious hand. It enters the atmosphere of a desert planet and plunges to the ground. Looks pretty serious, yet maybe not.Ī lightsaber tumbles out of space. Ok, Imma gonna try and copypasta this without looking. That galaxy far, far away appeared to be in good hands. Reviewing another scene, with spaceships blasting away at each other with phasers or whatever, Abrams could briefly be heard making ray-gun noises, the way a kid lying on his bedroom floor and drawing his own spaceships might. The question was tabled, but “wonderful preposterousness” isn’t a bad descriptor of the Star Wars ethos at its best. “We could improve this thing, but at some point do we lose the wonderful preposterousness?” Some perfectionist suggested a few digital polishes, but Abrams was wary. We just buried it in the sand, and Neal Scanlan, the creature guy, pushed down on one side and the thing came up on the other side.” At the session, the scene, with the alien suddenly sticking its head over a dune, got a big laugh. Abrams later called it “a classic, old-school seesaw puppet. One scene featured an alien creature that abruptly pops up out of the desert landscape with glowing, flashlight eyes that make it look like a distant cousin to the Jawas of A New Hope. Case in point: At the effects session, Abrams was demonstrating his commitment to the more retro, more tactile filmmaking Kasdan had talked about. The several minutes of footage I saw backed Williams up, as much as any several minutes from any movie could. If I can quote Steven Spielberg”-citing one of the director’s favorite phrases-“J.J. The extensions of the mythology are very cleverly and beautifully written, I think. “What I have seen is absolutely delightful and witty and funny and engaging. But Lando I don’t think is finished in any way, shape, or form." "Right now, there’s no Lando Calrissian in this movie. But it means that there will be constant critical looking at it from now to the end, saying, ‘Do we need this? Do we need that? Is it better if this comes out, even though we love it?’ Killing your darlings.”Īlso sounds like we will be getting Lando in a future film. I mean, we were really aiming to have it be-when it’s over you’ll say, ‘I wish there’s more.’ Or, ‘Wait, is it over?’ Because how rarely you get that feeling nowadays, and I think we’re headed there. In the last 20 minutes, you think, why isn’t this over? We didn’t want to make a movie like that. A lot of very entertaining movies lately are too long. One of the things that we always refocus on from the get-go was that it not be one of these very long, bloated blockbusters. It’s full of wonderful stuff, incident and character stuff and jokes and effects. directed it so beautifully, and it’s so exhilarating and everything. “This new movie, first of all, it’s turning out really great. I still think it's a few years down the road, maybe longer due to lack of sufficient content. That probably makes more sense than putting them on Disney or Netflix, as they'd have their own platform and subscribers. While they may eventually have a dedicated channel for Star Wars, like an ESPN, more likely it would start as an app like Netflix or HBO, where you could access all of the Star Wars IP for a monthly fee. The tie-ins to the OT are especially awesome.Įdit: I just read the article, which puts a dedicated "Channel" into perspective. On a side note, we're on Episode 3 of Season 4 of The Clone Wars series and even though it's hard to believe, it IS getting better with each passing season. I think that eventually, having a dedicated Star Wars channel would be cool but they'll need to produce several more series before they have enough content for 24/7/365. Good lord, now Disney is talking about starting it's own Star Wars TV channel, and maybe Marvel, too.
